Preface

THE present volume is intended to be, with the Divine permission, the first of a series of similar works by the same author, designed especially, as the general title indicates, for family and private reading. The object is to supply simple and brief Expositions of Divine Truth, suitable for domestic instruction and closet meditation; thus aiding the "priest over his own house" in conducting family worship, and in other ways training his children and his household for God and for eternity. To this end care has been taken, both in the selection and discussion of the subjects, to meet the diversified shades of individual character, religious experience, and domestic trial, generally found to exist in the family circle.

It has been the earnest aim of the author to make CHRIST the substance of each reading and the centre of the entire work; that, viewing the subject from any stand-point, HE may be seen as the one Object around whom all Divine honour clusters, from whom all saving truth emanates, and towards whom all Christian experience and practical godliness should converge.

The author would fain hope that the influence and usefulness of these volumes may extend to regions beyond the ministry of home, and be found to aid the humble service of the cottage lecture, the earnest labours of the lay-preacher, and even find its way into the rural Sanctuary of the outlying hamlet, dependent for its Sabbath services upon the zealous but uncertain ministrations of the itinerating evangelist. The second volume in the series will embrace more frequent reference to eminent and instructive characters drawn from inspired history, illustrative of doctrinal teaching, exemplifying and enforcing experimental and practical religion.

With this brief explanation of his design, the author, though deeply sensible of its many shortcomings, ventures to lay his work at the feet of the Christian Church; trusting that, at least, the unsectarian spirit which it breathes will secure for it among the one Body of Christ a kind and indulgent acceptance; and praying that the vital and precious truths which it has endeavoured to unfold, may win for it the blessing, and promote far-reaching the glory, of the TRIUNE GOD.

Bath, May, 1867.
